Day Two Line Up – April 21
Somewhere between sheer, apocalyptic heaviness and precise riffing, lays otherworldly ANCIIENTS—a Vancouver-based rock juggernaut forging crushing heavy metal evocative of veterans High on Fire and contemporary sonic craftsmen, Opeth.
ANCIIENTS have combined fuck-off-huge chords with mind-altering riffage that takes you on an unfamiliar trip. Their eponymous debut (available as a free download via bandcamp) reeks of colossal harmonies, shattering rhythm sections and distinct, powerful vocals.
This quartet—made up of: Kenny Cook (Lead Vocals, Guitars), Chris Dyck (Guitar and Vocals), Aaron “Boon” Gustafson (Bass) and Mike Hannay (Drums)—started as the brainchild of Cook, hoping to find a more creative outlet for his music. Fully realized once Cook and Dyck’s creative efforts were combined, the band’s line-up solidified and ANCIIENTS released its self-titled EP engineered by Shawn Penner and mastered by Stu Mckillop.
Fast forward a handful of impressive shows and praises in local music rags, we now find the group preparing their full length album with help of Jesse Gander at the Hive Studios.
What to expect from the band’s next release? More of the same hard-hitting, meticulously-crafted riffs laced in pungent metal glory. The Hashes of the Pharaohs continue to burn as ANCIIENTS revels in its mysterious power.
Featuring members of Barn Burner, Hashed Out, Bend Sinister, 3 Inches of Blood, Percheron, Cooked and Eaten & Hashteroid, Vancouver’s Dead Quiet’s will have you hoisting a thousand beers and cranking hot knives like a blacksmith while throwing up the horns and yelling “Fuck yeah!” out loud regardless of being the only person in the room! Dead Cold are equal parts Doom, Stoner Rock with some Progressive tinged Metal with a dollop of Heavy Blues tossed in for good measure. Their music is anything BUT dead quiet. This is music that deserves to be cranked up to 11 and played till the pictures fall off the walls!
Lavagoat is an otherworldly concoction of doom, death, thrash, psych, 70’s hard rock and heavy metal brewed in Saskatoon, SK since 2007.
If you’ve never had the opportunity to see Lavagoat, this is one of the rare opportunities for you to do so as they rarely venture to Calgary. Don’t miss the crushing heaviness as they will knock you to your knees and make you beg for more.
Orbital Express (Official)
Orbital Express was formed and did its damage between the years of 2007-2011 before going on a 5 year hiatus. In that time, the guys released a self titled LP that is still selling copies in Europe, and played alongside countless local bands as well as some heavy hitters including; Black Mountain, Lion Eyes (members of Clutch), Stratovarius (Finland), Monotonix (Israel), not to mention the “dream come true” of replacing Baroness to open for CLUTCH in Saskatoon, SK.
In early 2016 the guys rallied and realized that ORBITAL EXPRESS needed to return, and that it needed to be big. In a few short months and with the addition of a killer new bass player the band worked hard to pick up where they left off, re-introducing themselves to a couple of the old “fan favorites” (Space Station Fornication, March To Mars) as well as writing a plethora of brand new tunes which the band plans to release in the fall of this 2016.
Hail the Leaf! Iommic tribute… Riffs and reefer, fuzz and phaser mixed in with a little time travel. ChronoBot are four dudes from all the across the Canadian Prairies who came together to make Cosmic Doom and summon the 40 ft. Robot and get fuzzed!
Calgary’s LORDOSIS is another band you don’t get to see very often. While they say they sound like Rush meets Grunge, they are so much more than that with an intricate mix of progressive, sludge, doom and psychedelic influences thrown into the mix. If you haven’t caught these guys yet, be sure to be at Distortion to see them on the 21st!
